It was a glorious morning at the Lakeshore Preserve as all of our resident winter birds were flying around everywhere, singing their songs. Today was the first day that I heard dark-eyed junco, mourning dove, and song sparrow songs, and chickadees, nuthatches, and blue jays were extremely active. The warm weather has our birds juiced up and working quickly to establish territory for mating. Also, the snow in the woods has melted quickly, exposing the leaf litter from the fall and letting decomposers get started on recycling them. All of those birds were moving a little faster than I could photograph them, but once again I found a barred owl, this time perched on a limb near a paved trail, which makes me think it was still hunting at 9:30 AM in bright light. It flew over my head and gave me a soft hoot as I kept moving through this new spring world.
