June 10 Spiderwort Everywhere

Yesterday at the Nature Center long blades of green held out several pink pods all over the prairie and this afternoon those pods have almost all opened into small blue flowers with three petals and six stamens with  bright yellow anthers emerging from the center. I read that spiderwort (Tradescantia virginiana) flowers will only last for one morning, then the petals start wilting and will turn into a jelly-like fluid, disintegrating into a paste in your hand. Not every spiderwort in town will flower the same day, so expect to see the flowers around for a while, opening up when they have gotten enough sun, warmth, and moisture. For example, I first saw these flowering at the Wingra Savanna on Monroe Street four days ago. There are several very close relatives to this plant with names like prairie spiderwort, showy spiderwort, long-bracted spiderwort, ohio spiderwort, zigzag spiderwort, and hairy-stemmed spiderwort. I'm just an amateur, so I'll go with virginia spiderwort for now.
