A week ago Anne and I were wondering when the catalpa trees (
Catalpa speciosa) might flower and today they were. Catalpas are medium height, frequently with multiple trunks and very big heart-shaped leaves. Another easy identifier are its foot long bean-like seed pods, some of which stay on the tree through winter. These big beautiful bell flowers coat the tree with white feathers and the art inside the bell is colorful and smells good too. Definitely a nice tree to replace a doomed ash if you have one or two of those in your yard.
