We were heading to the garden for a quick watering when I stopped along the Lakeshore path to get a closer look at a small patch of grasses. To my surprise a green cricket with black back was hopping around and I managed to catch him in the frame for a quarter second. I didn't see it long enough to identify, but since its antennae are longer than its body, it's definitely no grasshopper, but possibly a katydid. The lines and colors of grasses in the evening breeze say summer like nothing else in the Midwest. Fireflies are perhaps a close second.
