January 16 Robins Here to Stay

During mild winters, some American robins (Turdus migratorius) may stay put in southern Wisconsin. It seems to me that with our current combo of very little snow cover, patches of open water, and many days with warmer than average temperatures, at least one small flock of robins is content to winter in the Lakeshore Nature Preserve. I have seen at least two of them there each week since mid-December, and there seem to be at least a dozen around. I do believe that most robins did migrate - I saw many flocking up in October and gorging themselves - and those return around March 10 on average. If winter continues petering out, I would expect them back sooner. But maybe winter is just toying with us?
