January 18 Meltdown

Temperatures rose into the 40s early today and street asphalt was mostly dry by 10:00 AM. I was on a run through Mt. Horeb and saw these three snow people. The presence of snowmen means it's warm enough for packing snow, which binds together because it's wetter as it melts. The "normal" annual snowfall for Madison over the past 30 years is 50.9 inches. Remember though that it's more likely that the total will not be 50 inches: over the past 15 winters, Madison has seen snowfall totals between 29 and 102 inches, and only 1/3 of those years saw totals close to "average." Right now we have 8 inches for our winter total. We will need a record February to get to 50.9.
