April 29 Green up Continues
Three weeks later, this is the progress spring has made. The prairie is almost covered again in shoots and short grasses, almost all the trees are flowering and/or leafing, and the sun is now as strong as it is in the middle of August (7 weeks from the summer solstice in either direction). The old endless views of winter are now being dissected by tree leaves and days seem to go on forever. And, with no mosquitoes or flies yet, this is quite probably the best time of year to be in Wisconsin. We've survived the northern winter and the bounty of spring is beginning to show. The Nature Center is a new place every time I visit - there are more dimensions on the landscape and new animals appearing all the time. I saw hooded mergansers today out on our pond for a brief moment before they escaped a large group of students!
