May 11 Wild Geranium

Now that the trees have mostly leafed out, many of the spring ephemeral flowers have finished blooming. Wild geraniums (Geranium maculatum) mark the bridge between spring and summer as their pinkish-purplish flowers color the forest floor. These plants love to grow in forests and fields, and since they do so well next to their cousins the garden geraniums, many native plant nurseries have them available for gardens too. When these flowers are done blooming, keep an eye out for long, slender seed pods which will eventually burst open to scatter the seeds.
