May 13 Green Up Finishing
Two weeks ago at the nature center, the prairie plants were
ankle-high and the tree branches were easy to see. Now, many prairie plants are
up to our knees, and the trees’ leaves are easily hiding the branches and the
birds perched upon the branches. An increasing number of butterflies and blooming
shooting stars (Dodecatheon meadia)
and golden alexanders (Zizia aurea)
add other colors to the vibrant greens of the prairie. At least two goose
families and one duck family are sharing the pond, and other birds continue to
prepare nests. It’s an exciting time to get outside and see the
quickly-changing landscape!
