April 30 Seven Little Goslings

On my bike trip this morning through Paunack Park on Lake Monona, I saw a goose family foraging in the grass! There were several pairs of geese throughout the park, but only this one has babies so far. The little ones waddled close to mom and dad as I tried to get just close enough for this picture. The lady goose typically lays between 2 and 8 eggs in its only brood of this year, so this seems to be a very healthy family of seven. In just a few days after hatching, the goslings leave the nest and are able to walk, swim, dive, and feed on their own, so these could be as young as 2 days old. They will stay with a parent for all of this first year and if they grow and stay healthy enough, will join the migrations this winter. Although this past winter, many geese stayed in Wisconsin, rotating around various open waters. Watch to see how quickly these little birds grow up!
