The great blue heron (Ardea
herodias) is perhaps the best-recognized heron in Wisconsin, from its tall
stature on land and it’s habit of flying with its neck tucked in and its legs
straight out. Its large, pointed beak is perfect for hunting fish and frogs and
pretty much anything else that crosses their path. As this heron was quietly
hunting at the pond at the Aldo Leopold Nature center, a noisy oriole began
building a nest in a tree overhanging the pond. These birds, in addition to a
number of painted turtles, will bring lots of color to the pond this summer!
