May 8 Robin Chicks

Yesterday I had seen a robin sitting on this nest in a white pine tree at the nature center. Today I remembered to check after classes and did not see mama robin on top of the eggs. So I moved in to check the nest and saw these fuzzy chicks, fast asleep. Judging by the way it looked yesterday, I believe these chicks are less than 2 days old. There are definitely three and possibly one more in that great middle spot, with bodies on all sides of it. I then stepped away and watched as the mother brought in a worm and offered it to the chicks. If they moved to get it, they certainly moved slow, because from my view I couldn't see and tiny mouths open up or any noise from the chicks. Robins seem to make nests without a lot of regard for activity levels nearby. This spot is tucked in behind lot of branches and long needles, but during the week, hundreds of people pass by each day. The nest itself is a a large cup of woven plant fibers, glued together with a lot of mud, with pieces of white and green plastic for warmth/decoration. If they survive a few weeks, I'll check up on these chicks to see how fast they are growing up.
