New flowers continue to bloom at the nature center’s
Kindergarten Woods. While the white trilliums (Trillium grandiflorum) are slowly turning pink as the petals age
and the nearby mayapples (Podophyllum
peltatum) are hiding their white flowers under their leaves, some showier
flowers have begun to bloom. Just like its other lady slipper relatives, these yellow
lady’s slippers (Cypripedium calceolus) get their name from the fused petals that
make the shape of a slipper- or of a brain. It’s a treat to see these showy
flowers in our woods, since they’re often picky about where they grow (which is
why they are unsuccessful when transplanted).
